Desk

On the desk: the themes we’re tracking now.

A look at the mandates and sub-sectors drawing the most attention on the desk right now — and the discipline that connects them.

Active desk themes

People ask what we are seeing. Below is an honest sketch of where mandate interest is concentrating on the desk — five themes that show up again and again in what offices ask us to map. These are areas of focus and representative situations, not specific completed transactions; the point is the pattern, and the discipline that ties it together.

1. Founder succession at scale

The single largest source of quality private opportunity in the West right now is demographic. A generation of founders who built profitable, lower-middle-market businesses is reaching retirement without an obvious successor. These are not turnarounds — they are good companies in need of a steward. For patient, control-oriented family capital, succession is the most reliable way into durable assets at sensible entry prices.

2. Cash-pay-resilient healthcare

Within healthcare services, the desk keeps returning to sub-sectors insulated from reimbursement risk — ophthalmology and ambulatory surgery, dermatology and aesthetics, fertility. Strong private-pay components make these categories more resilient and more ownable, and they sit in a market where multiples have reset from their 2024 peak toward a more disciplined ~11.5x.

The opportunity is always in the sub-sector and the situation — never in the slogan.

3. Applied AI with real revenue

AI-enabled services are a genuine new lane, but the desk underwrites them conservatively: recurring contract revenue, proprietary data, and workflow lock-in over narrative. In healthcare in particular, the most interesting assets combine software economics with services stickiness — companies that are already paid, already embedded, and defensible because of the data they hold.

4. Consolidation in fragmented niches

Diagnostics, home and behavioral care, and veterinary services share a profile we like: highly fragmented, demographically supported, and full of credible add-ons. A disciplined platform in the right niche can compound for years. The work is in separating the genuinely scalable from the merely cheap.

5. Cross-border corridors

Increasingly, the most interesting mandates pair capital and asset across regions — Asian and Gulf family capital deploying into US and European operating companies, where a global office has a structural angle a local buyer does not. These deals reward a desk that can source on one side of a corridor and diligence on the other.

How a theme becomes a position

A theme on its own is worthless — every investor can read the same headlines. The value is in the path from theme to a specific, ownable company, and that path is deliberately narrow. It runs from mandate (which themes fit this office, at what check size and ownership) to universe (the mapped set of companies in the sub-sector) to screen (removing the weak fits on ownership, timing, and quality) to memo (the few that earn a documented case) to decision. Most of the funnel is rejection. Of a hundred companies mapped against a theme, a handful become memos and fewer still become opportunities a principal should spend time on.

What we pass on

Discipline is most visible in what does not make the cut. We pass on assets with heavy government-reimbursement exposure, single-asset turnarounds dressed up as platforms, businesses priced for perfection, and AI stories with no recurring revenue underneath. Saying no early and often is not caution for its own sake — it is what protects the scarcest resource a principal has, which is attention. A pipeline that forwards everything is indistinguishable from one that filters nothing.

The common thread

None of these themes is a tip. Each is a place to look, not a reason to act. What turns a theme into an opportunity is the same discipline every time: a sharp mandate, a documented source trail, a fit score with the reasoning attached, and the patience to pass on most of what arrives. That is the work — and it is the only thing that reliably separates a real opportunity from a good story.
